Joey and I joined Wheatsville Co-op this week. We are stoked about their local and organic selections!
Went to the farmer’s market this weekend to pick up our Thanksgiving bird. We must not have remembered the birds were first come first serve as we wanted a 6-8 pounder and got a 21 pounder instead. Oh hello, xmas! Now, does anyone know how I can saw this baby in half?!
I haven’t had a chance to really talk about it on here, but Joey and I started a business, Kippin’ It Paleo! Please check out our Kickstarter! We had our first tasting today at The Combine and it went so well. People are digging our food and that feels amazing!!

I’ve been stressed lately trying to juggle my 40 hour a week job, photography on the side and starting a new business so Joey and I will be doing the 21 Day Sugar Detox (created by Diane Sanfilippo of Balanced Bites) starting today! I’m all prepared with food and looking forward to kicking my stress induced sugar cravings!
While I’m super excited now, I might be complaining of headaches and other fun withdrawal symptoms in a few days…
I am in a constant state of feeling like there’s not enough time for cleaning the apartment, buying groceries, cooking meals, doing laundry, walking/playing with the dog/cat, running errands, having a social life, exercise, relaxation time (reading, tv, etc.) and working in order to afford all of the above. The chores come first and taking care of ourselves usually comes in second. I often feel run down from the constant cycle of things that NEED to get done versus the things I want to do such as exercising and relaxing. I can’t even fathom adding kids into the mix.
Is it my generation? Am I lazy? Do we just have more to deal with now than older generations? I hate my job and thus it drains me. I don’t feel like my body was meant to sit at a desk staring at a computer all day. Yet, so many people do that and love it. I also know that it feels like there’s an increasing number of people that make it into there mid 20’s and decide that going to college and then working at the same job for the rest of your life feels like a death sentence. Joey and I are two such people.
Many of you may already know that Joey and I have decided to start Kippin’ It Paleo, a paleo food preparation and delivery service, because we both hate working in an office and sitting all day in front of a computer. If we find it hard and stressful to balance cooking meals from scratch into our busy schedule, then I am sure other people do too. I find it really hard to eat out without triggering some kind of autoimmune response because my body is intolerant to nuts, grains, gluten, legumes, dairy, eggs and sometimes nightshades. My body also reacts to sugar, but when under stress, I subject myself to it which I know is terrible.
When our business website goes live, we’ll have a blog attached to the site. It’s then and there that I’ll rehash my full story since I believe there are many people that can and will relate. Maybe some people will realize that the headaches they get correspond with eating a certain food or if they feel really tired, that could be food induced as well.
Part of the reason for this business is to be able to set my own hours and rules for how and when I work and to be a part of something I believe in and care about. I love the idea of helping other people by doing something that will help give my life more meaning and allow me to live a healthier life.
March 22, 2013. That was the last time I posted. A lot has happened in 5 months. Joey and I moved from New York to Texas. We both started new jobs, tried new things, met new people, ate food that we knew would wreak havoc on our poor bodies, yada, yada.
Yesterday, we finally joined a new CrossFit gym called The Combine Strength & Conditioning. I miss how my arms and abs were starting to tone. Right now, I feel all sorts of fluffy. Operation go hard body is back in motion.
Since my biggest weakness with physical activity is on the stamina side of things, in addition to my CF classes, I’m going to do a weekly in home experiment to track my stamina progress. How long can I keep up without slowing down. The challenge is simple. 5 squats followed by 5 burpees every minute on the minute until I can’t finish in a minute. Once that gets too easy (20 rounds and counting?), I’ll up the reps.
Tonight’s score was 10 rounds.
I took a front and side photo of myself tonight and while I am too self conscious to post that now, I’m saving it for when I can be proud to show how far I’ve come. Instead, I’ll show you my proudest CF moment so far as part of this year’s open. I got 95lbs overhead. 🙂
As soon as CrossFit Games workout 13.3 was announced, (see below) I laughed. I’ve never gone past an 8 lb ball for wall balls in the WODs because, if I did, I’d be there all day. So, when a 14 lb ball was prescribed, I knew I didn’t even need to think about double-unders or (bahahaha) muscle-ups.
Ladies got a 14 lb wall ball and the dudes got a 20 lb wall ball.
I managed to deliver 64 wall balls. I can’t even tell you how many were no reps. It felt like a third were no reps because I kept skimming or not hitting the wall.
I arrived early before the work out to take some pictures for a CrossFit Kids workout for my gym. Then we got to watch Christian Harris, our CrossFit South Shore resident beast, rock the work out and complete up to 25 muscle ups. I’ve got pictures. They’ll be up soon. It was sick to watch.

I’ve been having a rough day / week / month / year? Joey and I are relocating to Austin in approximately one month. My job is aware and they have hired my replacement for me to train, but it is our busy season (I work in an accounting firm) and I am mentally fried. I really wish I had more time for…anything? Specifically, I wish I had more time or energy for CrossFit. I mean, with snazzy shoes like these, who wouldn’t want to wear them as often as possible?
So anyway, I was having a bad day. In my stressed out state I forgot to bring my lunch (yummy Caveman To Go)! Joey left work early due to a swollen ankle that he managed to injure pumping gas. Yea, I didn’t really ask either… Anyway, he drove all the way out to where I work to bring me my food and suprised me with deliscious Coco-Roons! I may not be a fan of all of their flavors, but the “Brownie” flavor is addictive. Also, there’s nothing terrible inside them! See?!
I am a registered participant of the 2013 Crossfit Games through my CrossFit gym, CrossFit South Shore (L.I.). A quick recap of the leaderboard after workout 13.1 puts our gym at 85 out of 264 in the Northeast region. We walked away with a total of 951 points for that workout as a gym. Our top ladies for this WOD were Melissa Smith, Wendy Sylvester and Keri Lanzarotta. Our top dudes for this WOD were Christian Harris, Matthew Herrick and Connor Duddy.

I’ve been on a blogging hiatus. I’m sorry. I was just getting started. I was on a roll and had strangers making comments and suggestions to my blog and that felt awesome. Then my blog entered limbo because that’s where I am in life right now. Actually, I’m in a basement, but that’s part of my limbo until my boyfriend, Joey, and I get to relocate to Austin, TX in late April / May. I’m working crazy hours at a job I don’t care about to help fund our move. I’ve no time or space (or appropriate weather) for photography which is one of my loves. I’ve no energy and motivation for much in the way of health stuffs either at the moment due to said overtime at said job I hate with the exception of eating delicious paleo delivery from Caveman To Go and my crossfit classes at CrossFit South Shore.
OK. Now that I’ve given you some excuses for my absense and led you on to my current state of unhappiness let’s start over. Again. I want this blog to be something of use to people and not just me venting or making excuses for my oh so important and busy life. That was sarcasm. Get used to it. I want this blog to be more: recipes, ideas, CrossFit experiences, and my full story (which is ongoing).
My story is going to be coming to you in a 3-4 part blog post (wouldn’t want to throw a novel at you in the form of one post). Joey, who is super supportive, wrote his own blog post last week called Working On It: An Open Letter to CrossFit South Shore. He got an amazing response from our CrossFit community and I’m happy that he is progressing and realizing things on his own about his body and fitness. He told me that I should write my own story. He even offered to edit it as he is an incredible writer/editor and he also gave me the names of the posts. Think blog title.

So, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve written anything. Life = crazy. I learn new things about myself and my body all the time and that’s awesome. I started out at the end of August eliminating gluten, then dairy and last month started ditching sugar. I’ve had a bit of sugar, dairy and gluten in small doses over the last month and I learned that my body just doesn’t like them. I have gluten to thank for the quarter sized rash on my neck I’m sure and for my psoriasis being worse.
I plan to spend the next week or so getting back to stricter paleo and then it’s time for the final elimination phase of eggs and nightshades. I eat lots of eggs so this will be a challenge. I’m also going to grab some fermented cod liver oil that Diane Sanfilippo of Balanced Bites recommended in her book, Practical Paleo, for people, like me, with a leaky gut. Basically autoimmune = leaky gut.
Anyway, onto my main excitement as of late, Crossfit! I never thought I’d be into something like this. I’ve tried every workout imaginable and never saw results. Paleo + crossfit = WORKS! I love the group setting and the support everyone gives one another. Love it.

I’m third from the right. We finished the foundations classes on Friday night and a bunch of us had our first “real” class on Monday. It was awesome! I loved being able to put some weights onto the bar and see what I could do. I feel like 63lbs on a front squat was a good place to start for a newbie and I was honestly surprised that I could hold that much weight for a front squat!

I lift things up and put them down. And I like it. A lot.
I’ve been so busy lately. I woke up this morning and was amazed that it was November 20th already. Time flew. I guess when you take my boring 40 hour per week job and add in crossfit onramp 3x a week at 2 hours a pop and then my holiday influx of photo gigs and I am lucky I have time to make food! That really says something too because I know how important making sure you are eating enough is.
A couple of weeks ago I was talking to a friend about eating paleo and was so happy to see her and her mom giving it a try (especially since they both have autoimmune stuffs too). Discovering paleo has done incredible things for me and I love spreading the anti-grain mantra. As Diane Sanfilippo of Balanced Bites says, “Gluten is bad. Bacon is rad.”! Also, now I see what sugar did. It kept weight on me no matter what I did exercise wise. It made my psoriasis worse. My psoriasis is still there, but it’s a lot less severe since starting the detox. I need to improve that leaky gut!
I’m excited that I haven’t had a single cup of coffee that contained sugar during the detox. I (with the help of my super awesome and supportive boyfriend) refrained from eating any treats at a Friendsgiving I attended. The only cheats I’ve had on the detox is some balsamic vinegar a handful of times. I’m not even sure if it is cheating. I’m assuming so because there is a little bit of sugar in balsamic. The other cheat was I had a pumpkin souffle. It had a very small amount of maple syrup in it. Considering I went from two cups of coffee with heaping mounds of sugar a day along with stuffing myself with fruit and chocolate chips in the evening to none of the above, I am proud of myself.
